Have you ever gazed into the night sky? Have you ever considered the vast complexity of the Universe? The number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy alone measures in the hundreds of billions. If you were to travel from one end of the galaxy to the other at the speed of light it would take over 100,000 years to complete the journey. And the Milky Way is just one of the more than 100 Billion galaxies in the known universe.
John 1:14 tells us that the One who created all of that “became flesh and lived among us.” Whoa!
Jesus was sent to us. He took on real human flesh. He did not stay at a safe distance. The one who is bigger than our minds can comprehend came here to Earth. He experienced real human emotions. He lived among us in the messy reality of human existence. He was sent here to save us from all of our wrongdoing! J.D. Greear has noted that “Jesus is referred to as ‘sent’ forty-four times in the New Testament.” Jesus mission was not something that could be done from the comfort of a heavenly throne. He needed to go to broken people!
After he had conquered the grave and rose from the dead, Jesus passed his mission on to his followers. He told them “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you” (John 20:21). Being “sent” is the core identity of the church. This is not something that can be done from the comfort of a padded church chair. We must go to broken people. This is our calling!
For the next several weeks at our Restore Group we will explore what it means to be a “Sent” community. We will discuss community needs, and begin to ask where God is sending us. If you live in the Wood River Valley we invite you to join us. Learn more by clicking the “Connect” tab in the menu above and selecting “Restore Groups.”
